The purpose of the Citizens Police Academy is to provide a forum whereby you can develop a basic understanding of the West Lampeter Township Police Department’s duties and role within the community of West Lampeter Township. The Citizens Police Academy teaches citizens about the philosophy, policies, and guiding principles of law enforcement and the ethical conduct governing police services within the community. It gives citizens an appreciation of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement and provides an opportunity for citizens to offer comments, ideas, and solutions in a proactive manner.
The course period is four consecutive weeks of two-hour classes twice weekly from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, a total of 16 hours, and consists of basic classroom instruction, presentations, and demonstrations on topics such as criminal investigation, constitutional and criminal law, use of force, departmental structure, defensive tactics, and riding with police officers while on actual patrol. This exclusive experience is important in creating a true understanding of what an officer’s job is like and contributes to an exciting, interactive learning experience. The final day of the class ends with a graduation ceremony for those who successfully complete the course.
